Pumps have a range of operating points where they operate most efficiently and with minimal wear. This range is called the pump's Preferred Operating Range (POR). Pumps operating within POR have a useful life at least 2-4x as long as pumps consistently operating outside of POR. However, few have the tools to know where their pumps operate in relation to their Preferred Operating Ranges.
The Dynamic Pump Optimizer (DPO) is continually monitoring each pump's operating point and will not run pump combinations or speeds that force a pump to operate outside of its POR, increasing efficiency and dramatically extending pump life.
The DPO will operate your pumps within their Preferred Operating Ranges. Pump manufacturers prefer that their pumps are operated within the POR, typically defined as a range of flows between 70% and 120% of the Best Efficiency Point (BEP) flow rate. The POR has been called the "sweet spot" of the pump, offering peak energy efficiency while limiting pump wear.
Pumps operating outside this range suffer harmful cavitation and vibration, damaging impellers and accelerating bearing and seal failures. By continually monitoring changing water system pressures and flow demands, the Dynamic Pump Optimizer (DPO) continually recalculates the optimal combination of pumps (and pump speeds for VFD-equipped pumps), ensuring that pumps always operate within their sweet spot.
Engineers typically design pump stations to achieve peak efficiency at maximum design flow. However, over 95% of the time, the pump station is not experiencing peak demand conditions, forcing the pumps to operate less effectively and outside their POR.
The DPO dynamically adjusts pump speeds to ever changing system conditions to always run the best set of pumps at optimal speeds to meet demand while minimizing energy consumption.
The DPO determines which pumps to run by computing the optimal pump combination and speeds that deliver the required flow at the lowest possible energy consumption. The DPO automatically rejects sets of pump combinations and speeds where one or more pumps would operate outside their POR, ensuring each pump operates within its "sweet spot".
The grey section of the chart above illustrates the POR of a pump over a range of pump speeds. The DPO will only operate the pump at speeds that fall within this POR, reducing energy consumption and extending pump life.
